Congratulations – you are a parent! No matter how perfect the moment, sooner rather than later you will have to register that little bundle of joy. Alsa, you can’t escape the paperwork.
What are the regulations?
By law a child in Kenya must be registered immediately after birth or within the first six months. Even though there may be a death after birth, registration is still necessary as well as a death certicate. A birth certificate is necessary even for enrolling a child to school.
- A parent or both parents, guardian or any other person legally responsible for the child must complete Form BI-24 (with black ink only);
- This form must be submitted to the nearest office of the Department of Home Affairs if you are in South Africa, or the nearest South African embassy, mission or consulate if you are overseas.
- Once your baby’s birth has been registered, an abridged birth certificate will be issued free of charge, usually a day or so after the registration application has been submitted.
